How Net Metering Works!

There is a lot of buzz regarding Net Metering these days. With more and more states offering benefits of net metering, it is important to understand what it means if you are considering installing solar. The process has been divided into sections below for clarity.

  1. In your current scenario without solar, you always consume electricity and hence your electricity meters are programmed to record all readings as ‘import only’.

  1. After you install solar, you can produce electricity and hence two cases arise:
    1. If you produce less than what you consume (when all your loads are on!), energy flow happens same way as before, just that your bill is reduced due to part generation from solar.
    2. At some point if you produce more than you can consume (when you are on your vacations!), you would give back extra electricity to your meter. A meter than can record your ‘import’as well as ‘export’becomes customary and your monthly bill would be the difference of your‘import’ and ‘export’

Such a meter is called Net Meter and this process is termed as Net Metering.
